Motherhood and Health

Motherhood and health for the child are inseparably connected. "As the twig is bent, so grows the tree," as the old adage teaches us. Mom establishes our concept of a healthy diet plan.

I have read that by the age of three, a child's basic way of relating to the world has been established. If Mom only gets a brief maternity leave from work before turning her child over to daycare and TV, whose child will this be?

Putting a baby on "the bottle" before he or she is done breast-feeding is a guaranteed invitation to future health problems. There is a strong association between type one diabetes and drinking cows' milk too early -- and pity the child who starts drinking sugar-filled formula or juices when what they need is mother's milk.

And where is the tenderness that only a mother can provide, when Mom's off at work?

Both the institution of motherhood and health of the whole family have suffered as changes in the economy have made it necessary for mothers to work outside the home, as well as handling the responsibilities of motherhood.

Working outside the home doesn't bring in enough money for most women to endure the stresses and expenses it causes, as this article (linked below) points out.

When you think about it, both motherhood and health have been outsourced in many apparently prosperous countries. Children have been placed in the care of childcare providers and the whole family's health has been entrusted to fast food, take-out, and TV dinners. Such progress we're making, eh?

My point is, one of the most important human institutions -- motherhood -- is being undermined by the false notion that mothers must work outside the home. Fortunately, this can easily be corrected.
