Fosamax Warnings -- Where Are They?
Fosamax warnings about the surprising number of femur breaks occurring among long-time users of the drug should be of concern to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, or so you would think. Not surprisingly, they are taking their sweet time in warning the many women who continue to take this drug that has some other nasty side-effects.There is a lot to be learned about the pharmaceutical drug industry in general and the FDA in studying this fascinating case of the failings of modern medicine. Shouldn't there be Fosamax warnings to physicians who are prescribing the drug to menopausal women? No, let's wait and see if this blows over! I'm sure the manufacturer of Fosamax is lobbying the FDA pretty hard to not hurt their sales by making the public aware of this. Why Are Women's Bones Breaking, Anyway? In the USA, we hear a lot about the importance of consuming a lot of calcium from milk and other dairy products, so our bones will be strong in our old age. But, when you look at a chart of nations that consume the most dairy products, you see that they are the ones with the highest rates of bone breaks. Here is a quote from Julieanna Hever, Registered Dietician: "Ironically, studies clearly state that the countries around the world who consume the most dairy have the highest incidence of bone fractures!" Imagine that! So, the pharmaceutical industry, working with the media, keep the public very fearful of losing bone density. And, lo and behold, we still have more bone fractures -- so we are told we need a drug to make sure our bones don't break. When women dutifully take that drug for 10 years and their bones spontaneously break, you would think it might tell us something about our whole corrupt, misguided system of medicine -- but No, it doesn't. And the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, that watch-dog agency empowered to protect the American people won't even send out any Fosamax warnings!
ABC TV Did This Story On Fosamax Warnings
The ABC TV News story above mentioned that "The controversy is reminiscent of the medical world's turn-about on use of hormone replacement therapy in 2002. Thought to reduce women's risk of heart disease, combined estrogen and progestin actually increased risks for both that and for breast cancer."This is happens all too often. A drug like Celebrex is a best-seller and then, it becomes known that it is killing a lot of people due to some side-effect that was covered up -- but already known -- when it was released for public use. And the drug maker gets off with a relatively small fine and a few lawsuits. That's the way the game is played here. Another drug for diabetes, Avandia, was recently recalled. The American Medical Association released a report about Avandia, stating, “Use for at least 12 months is associated with a significantly increased risk of myocardial infarction and heart failure.” And the FDA usually drags their feet while deciding if there is a serious problem worthy of warning the public. Duh! Even if there are no Fosamax warnings from the Food & Drug Administration, perhaps it would make more sense to find if there is something about our Western, meat and dairy-based diet that makes us more likely to suffer from osteoporosis.
